Russian figure skating champions among passengers in DC area plane crash, sources say

Russian media has reported that two Russian figure skaters were among those on board the American Airlines small eagle plane from Kansas that collided with a military helicopter crashing into the Potomac River near D.C.'s Reagan National Airport (DCA) Wednesday night.

Presidential spokesman, Dmitry Peskov expressed condolences to the families and friends of the victims.

"Unfortunately, we see that these sad information is being confirmed," Peskov said, acknowledging reports that former Russian figure skaters were on the plane. "There were other of our fellow citizens there. Bad news from Washington today," he added.

Several Russian state media outlets reported that Russian world figure skating champions in pairs from 1994, Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, were on board the flight.
